      Obama retakes oath of office

    • My Inauguration Blog...

      TleahciM

Like many Americans today, I'm stealing company time to watch a historic moment. Why not multi-task and blog about it so I can get fired more easily with a minute by minute accounting of how slack I'm being?

7:55AM - I'm a Republican but I can't help but get excited about today. There's just something cool about someone else besides an old white guy being sworn in as President. I'm no Obama cultist or hater but I'm not going sit there and not give him a fair shot.

8:25AM - I'm sorry but the younger Barbara Bush is still a hottie. I'd get with that Yalie.

8:43AM - What's the deal with the President-elect being announced as Barack H. Obama? PR folks tell him that Hussein wasn't a good idea or something?

8:48AM - Rick Warren is doing the invocation?! That's pretty sweet.

8:58AM - Biden's hair could withstand gale force winds. It's funny, this is the standard oath for all government employees. I've taken it a couple of times. :-)

9:00AM - Yo-Yo-Ma â€" I love that guy. Such a talent. Is it just me or do us AzN folk always look sharp suited up? :-)

9:06AM - Here we go: Republicans are going to call Obama an idiot for bungling the oath, Democrats are going to blame John Roberts for screwing it up.

9:10AM - I'll give the President this - so far, he's got a pretty good speechwriting staff working for him. I may not agree with everything that he's said, but the way he says it is done well.

9:13AM - I REALLY want to meet the guy that wrote this speech.

9:16AM - Grammar cop: Either goes with or, neither goes with nor.

9:22AM - Seriously, this speechwriting staff is SICK.

9:27AM - Okay President Obama, you've got me for the next 100 days. ME of all people. Thank your speechwriting staff and your amazing oratory skills because Slick Willy never got me on his side.

9:32AM - Okay Prof. Alexander, we get it. Slavery used to exist in America.

9:36AM - I'm definitely yellow and mellow today. :-) Nice touch good sir. At least he didn't go with something like Oriental and mental.

9:37AM - Commenting on this Facebook status feed: I'm tired of you idiots who are saying things like "We can live again." Is your life really that bad? Are you living in a sewer and just happen to have Internet access? Would you rather be living in some third world slum?

9:42AM - Shit, do I need to go back to work now?

My laptop's LCD and HD just died and so they're being replaced under warranty. I've got my desktop going but for some reason it's uber slow when it comes to the internet so I'm thinking of getting a new desktop - maybe aDell XPS One. Any thoughts?

    • The Fields Medal...

      TleahciM

...the Fields Medal! The Fields Medal!!

The Fields Medal is often described as the "Nobel Prize of Mathematics" for the prestige it carries, though in most other ways the relatively new Abel Prize is a more direct analogue. The comparison is not entirely accurate because the Fields Medal is only awarded every four years. The Medal also has an age limit: a recipient's 40th birthday must not occur before January 1 of the year in which the Fields Medal is awarded. This rule is based on Fields' desire that

… while it was in recognition of work already done, it was at the same time intended to be an encouragement for further achievement on the part of the recipients and a stimulus to renewed effort on the part of others.

The monetary award is much lower than the roughly US$1.5 million given with each Nobel prize. Finally, Fields Medals have generally been awarded for a body of work, rather than for a particular result; and instead of a direct citation there is a speech of congratulation.

    • Dear President Hu Jintao...

      TleahciM

...thanks for denying my application for a Visa to visit the People's Republic of China this summer. Even though I am an American of Taiwanese descent I have no interest in commiting any acts of political terrorism in your country. I rather enjoy the bi-annual missile tests across the Taiwan Strait so for me to protest such acts would be pointless. Besides, don't you consider Taiwan a part of China anyway? So by denying my application aren't you acknowleding the fact that Taiwan is in fact a separate entitiy? I mean fo realz yo. Aw who cares, I really didn't want to an Olympic keychain made of panda poop or watch some man-ish Chinese female weightlifter lift more weight in a single day than I will in an entire lifetime. Over here in democratic countries, we have day laborers to do that shit for us. That and relatively clean air, no fear of getting run over by tanks in sacred locales, and Fun Dip.

This is me, sticking out my green Fun Dipped tongue out at you.

Aside from the fact that I actually bought more expensive cables initially because I didn't trust the cheaper one, but then they turned out to be better so I bought the cheaper ones over the more expensive ones.

      Go for it.

Yep, I still paint. Not this month though, next month. I'm salary, so it shouldn't mean I get extra but because of the how much work has come through in the past week I'm going to be compensated.

It's worked for me so far, regardless of how foolish I look doing it. I've been losing over a pound per week, on average, since I purchased it.

We won't be registered anywhere. Baby registries are really just for the first child. We pretty much have everything we need (especially if it's a girl) and will only be buying things on an as-needed basis, except cloth diapers. I think we're going to go that way this time instead of disposables since it will likely be more cost effective and can be reused with the next kid - whenever that one comes.

It's horrible to come back from the Holidays and find a stack of work on your desk.
Just blow it off... nothing important could have happened during that time.
Just flip thru the pages looking for any checks, or valuable treats, then toss it all in the waste paper basket.

My ex isn't the kids' legal guardian, their dad has primary custody, so the legal thing's not a real worry at all.

I agree with your critique...but keep in mind that this is the very beginning of the story...the plot is going to get moving pretty quickly, so I'm hoping that'll take care of the forced nature of the character development.

Fortunately, the pain goes away shortly after I get home, a warm shower takes care of it quite nicely, and my wrist is fin for whatever I might need from it. Typing on my laptop at home doesn't bother it at all, it's the setup at my workstation that seems to be the problem, but there's not much I can do about it.

Go to a state school - it's cheaper.

Not that I'm saying you should settle, but places like Michigan have really good law schools, and for most of them you qualify for in-state tuition if you've lived there for at least a year - so even if you have to move, your tuition will drop for the last two years.
