    • Shortly After, We Got a Second Dog

      lefty

We got a second Min Pin in... July or August. We named her Stevie Licks. She loves me more than anything ever has, including my own mother and wife. It feels good to be so loved. This week Stevie got into some sugarfree gum containing xylitol. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs in two ways. First, it drops a dogs blood glucose to nothing, putting them into a coma and then killing them. Second, it will destroy their liver, causing awful things to happen before they die.

I was sleeping. Samantha was upstairs and heard an odd noise downstairs, thank god. She came downstairs to find Stevie eating roughly 30 pieces of gum out of an Ice Breakers container. She screamed. I woke up, upset, because I assumed Stevie had caught a mouse in the house or something like that. When she told me what happened I freaked out. We fought because I had told her not to leave the gum out. She didn't but Stevie managed to get at the gum anyway. She called a pet hospital while I got hydrogen peroxide (like ipecac for dogs) to get Stevie to puke up the gum. She did, puking in her kennel, then on the couch, then upstairs, then in the car twice on the way to the pet hospital.

I applaud my wife for ignoring me long enough to contact someone that could take in our dog. She ended up in the hospital for two nights. We saw her the morning after and Samantha took this picture of us:

      14mc80p.jpg

The doctor informed us that she still had to stay to make sure her blood glucose level wouldn't drop when she was taken off a glucose drip. She was allowed to come home later on the third day and she has been as normal as ever since. This dog is lucky my wife didn't have loud music on. Stevie is lucky she didn't wait until my wife had taken a shower. Stevie is lucky I found the hydrogen peroxide in a timely fashion (and stopped being hysterical long enough to stop yelling at my wife to look for it). We're all lucky she puked up enough of the gum to reduce her absorption of the xylitol.

We were informed that the amount of gum she consumed would have killed a 65 lb dog, and would have killed Stevie, easily, 17 times over.

I love my wife. I love my dogs. I love you guys.

      Happy New Year,

      -Ben.

We're planning on taking a trip to St. Louis soon. Not because there's anything special about it or that we really want to but because when Samantha said "where do you want to go on vacation?" I said St. Louis of the top of my head and after looking into AirBnB places around St. Louis and then attractions that are around there we decided that it could be a fun trip. We can also bring the dog with us because we found a nice place that is dog friendly!

So last Sunday, after denying Samantha on 1000 different occasions, I caved and said we could go get new phones. I had been using a 3G phone (Sony Xperia Play) and she had a 16GB iPhone 5 that was constantly out of storage space. My phone's available storage was measured in MB and I believe it was running Android 3.2 or possibly 3.3 so I couldn't even get new apps if I wanted them! The upside to that was my facebook app wasn't nearly as annoying as it is now but outside of that it was pretty much a sad, sad phone.

So before we were about to leave Samantha told me she got a neat Avengers sticker that she wanted to put on the car and after pleading for a while I went to put it on the car. After applying it I went to go back in the house to get my keys, only to realize that Samantha had closed the door... which I had locked. Shit. We locked ourselves out of the house and my car.

We debated about what to do for a while and ultimately called the police to ask them to come unlock the car for me. It's a $50 charge which is a far cry from what a locksmith would charge on a Sunday. Officer Chevremont was first on the scene. He... didn't have the right tools, though. You need Z tools to unlock a car... he had a metal pole that was crooked on the end. It was like... 5 feet long, not something for unlocking a car door. After about 20 minutes of him failing miserably and about 5 minutes of me failing equally well he called another officer in to help. When getting the stupid rod of dumb out of my car I nearly punched the cop in the face and I was like "oops, that would have been stupid" and he just laughed, clearly as flustered and sick of being there as I was.

After Officer Jost arrived and also couldn't get it I suggested we move to the driver side and try again. Again, no luck but then it dawned on me. It dawned on me so suddenly that I literally yelled "oh my god!" and startled Officer Jost. After apologizing to the officers I explained that if we simply hit the garage door button I could get my keys. Jost was already tired of being unable to get the door and let me have at it. I pulled the so called "tool" out, made a few bends in it and went to work. After about 90 seconds of slamming the end of it against my garage door opener disparately, I got it. I was so happy.

I ran in, got my keys, then came back out and opened my door. I then asked Officer Chevremont to make out the $50 fee... thing for me so I could pay it and he told me to forget about it. I'm not sure if he was embarrassed that they couldn't get it and didn't want to have to tell people about it or if he was upset with himself because it took so much time... or because we were all white. Either way I was happy to not have to pay $50 to get my car unlocked that I definitely couldn't afford to spend on it.

We went on my day off Monday to get our new phones. Samantha now has a iPhone 6+, I have a Droid Turbo and neither of them fit in the cup holders of my car.

I got married on October 25th. Everything went awesome. My dad sang for our first dance (John Legend's "All of Me") and Samantha's mother's best friend said the blessing in Italian which was fun. Everyone we hired got paid and we were happy we hired them.

We had our honeymoon at the beginning of November and that went great too. We went to Florida, stayed at a resort in Orlando that had a huge-ass pool and got to meet a few of Samantha's long-time friends. We only went to Epcot but we spent a good amount of time there.

I got to ask a Japanese teenager (as the employees for all of the country-themed stores are from that country) what a bag said on it because we didn't want to buy something that said something stupid on it. After much deliberation with a coworker, it said "the name of the company that made the bag".

After our honeymoon we flew to NYC to attend Samantha's first cousin's wedding in New Jersey. That was a pretty cool wedding as far as food goes, anyway. The ceremony MIGHT have lasted 15 minutes. The reception hall was kind of run down. It had to have cost a fortune but yeah they had a ton of food and it was a lot of fun to be at someone else's wedding so soon after having our own!

    • Something That Drives Me Crazy

      lefty

When someone gets drunk and into a fight, then gets beaten and has to go to the hospital.
When they get out, they are liable for their stay at the hospital.

Now I'm all for helping people in need, don't get me wrong, but having a benefit for them at a bar?

You'd think they wouldn't want to drink again but I guess I just don't understand alcoholism.

The thing that drives me crazy is the part where I'm expected to help them out of the situation they got themselves into because they decided it was a good idea to start a fight with a bunch of people after they decided it was a good idea to get drunk.

I do hate sounding callous but at least they weren't able to get far enough into the night to decide it was a good idea to drive drunk and kill an innocent pedestrian or another driver.
      =--=
This is all stemming from a party invite for someone I don't know on Facebook. The "story" paints a picture like the guy got what was coming to him but then I should feel sorry for him because he can't afford to pay his medical bills.

I then became incensed because his benefit is at a bar. That's like having an intervention at a crack house, no? This guy shouldn't be drinking anymore, right?

    • So... Minor Catastrophe Last Week

      lefty

Last Wednesday was pretty rough. I worked a short shift which was immediately followed by $300 worth of four fillings being done. After that I ran back to work to pick up Samantha so we could do grocery shopping for Friday, which was supposed to involve us having company over.

When we arrived home, there was an alarm going off and the door to the building was wide open.

I thought the sprinklers had gone off. As I got closer it turned out that a pipe must have burst because the water I could hear was actually coming out of the light fixtures and the alarm itself that was going off.

I got into our apartment to see the water starting to come in. It was bad. It was almost to the living room already. If we had been out much longer a bunch of stuff would have gotten ruined. I made a makeshift dam to stop the rising water by using all of our towels to block the water. It did work and it bought me time to get all of my wires and game systems into baskets. Luckily I had just cleaned the house pretty hardcore so there wasn't much on the ground to begin with. Also to our luck, Samantha's closet (closest to where water was coming in) was also recently gone through and there were no clothes on the floor in there either.

About 45 minutes into the panic the cops showed up and cut the power to the building... because they didn't want anyone to get electrocuted because they're idiots. All they did was make it so we had to do our "get everything off the floor" panic in the dark. By 9, about 90 minutes in, we had all of our movable items onto immovable items (beds and couches), our freezer and fridge were emptied of perishables and we were on our way to my parents' for the night (and the next couple).

Before we went to bed we were told that we were going to have to move, that they needed our stuff out of what used to be our apartment as soon as possible and that it was up to us to do the moving.

I didn't have time to feel bad, honestly. For most of Thursday I packed our things and moved some of them to my parents' house. Everything that was on the walls (because I didn't want them to get damaged by mold or rot of any kind), all of my magic cards (same reason) and the electronics (in case the workers had sticky fingers) went to my folks' for safekeeping.

While I worked and packed on Thursday Samantha looked for a new place for us to live. She actually found a place on Wed night that she liked but the guy didn't call her back. Anyway, by Thursday afternoon we had 4 walkthroughs set. Only one of them was for a place that wasn't awful and the guy was pretty psyched to have us move in. So much so that when I went to meet him again on Friday morning to further discuss us moving in the discussion was literally
      "moving in?"
      -"yup"
"ok!" *hands me the keys* *leaves*
No application. No money paid to him. Just gave me the keys, talked a little bit about the lease and just left. SO. WEIRD.

So my brother Ron (muellertime) agreed to help after work on Friday/Sat morning. I sent an email to my brothers and put a message on facebook and only one of my other brothers offered to lend a hand (and his much needed truck!) so Ryan and Ron helped me move on Friday and Saturday.

I was so glad to have their help, which I sorely needed. We ended up losing the couch that I love to use when I'm gaming/on my computer (which is attached to my television) because Ryan didn't strap it down correctly and despite my protests that he should redo it... he was very sorry that our couch was ruined but I told him not to worry about it because Samantha didn't even want us to move the thing but I wanted to keep it because I really liked sitting on it. Oh well, right?

By Sunday all we had left were a few unpacked kitchen items that were partially packed or ready to be immediately packed so in 2 or 3 trips with my car it was over.

So far we're... not unpacked by any stretch of the imagination but by a stroke of luck we only lost the couch, a crappy WalMart bookshelf that soaked up too much water, a creeper and minecraft steve cardboard mask/helmet set and that was about it.

I was fortunate to get a Sunday appointment for Charter to hook up our internet service, although I did spend... like 30+ minutes trying to get a service credit for "the few days we were without power and hence could not use internet". It took 3 people to say that yes, 3 days wouldn't break them and I could get that money back. I then called the power company to get my service transferred and although they couldn't credit me I simply said "well, I doubt much power was used anyway since it was out so... moot point, right?" and the guy just laughed and agreed. He also asked me to be patient because computers are slow, etc and I was like "there's no way you'll be slower than Charter" which got another good laugh from Mike, who I waited like 90 seconds to talk to and I was done in less than 10 minutes. Bravo, power company!

I returned today to check the mail one last time after returning my garage key (forgot I still had it) and I peeked in. It looks rough. They cut the drywall at about 3 feet off the ground in about 50% of the apartment. They pulled up the carpet in the whole place. They also had to tear out all of the low cabinets.

Our place got off easy, though. Our neighbor, a retiree and her live-in son didn't seem to lose much either (because her furniture was super old and rugged) but their place was completely ruined. When I checked the whole place was gutted. The entire place was torn out to stud, including the ceiling and the linoleum in the kitchen. We talked briefly on Sunday before I left and I'll miss her the most from that apartment. When we'd go on vacation she'd get our mail and even made us bread when I gave her bananas that would have gone bad while we were on our trip. She was a real sweetheart and I hope she finds a good place to stay.

I am glad I have a roof over my head again and a place that we can call our own.
